What is an Audi R8 Spyder?

Simple, really: the drop-top version of the Audi R8. A car we already like rather a lot has got an excess dose of glamour.

The R8’s roof — a folding cloth event that is mesmerising to watch, takes 20 seconds, and may be operated at around 30mph — and its various mechanisms add a stocky 125kg into the R8, carrying its kerb weight to an eek-inducing 1720kg (1695kg for its sportier R8 Spyder Plus). It just never feels that fat. Click on to read how…

This is no harder to drive quickly than an RS3, yet it is oodles more fun. You’ll only notice dynamic compromises over the coupe — mainly the strange bit of steering wheel wobble — should you truly look difficult for them.

And the noise… You would be forgiven for paying the extra #11k a Spyder controls over a coupe purely for the excess access you access to its cacophony of pops, crackles and naturally aspirated wail. It is not a mature point to enjoy, but sod it. It is so much fun. The vehicle is riotously quickly, yet speed isn’t its selling point; rather, you savour the play of building that speed. It is wonderful.

As is normal with Audi, you’re at the behest of choices listing paying for the full experience, but that really is a grade A cottage. The Virtual Cockpit that debuted on the TT is excellent, and suits the selfish nature of driving a supercar. The R8 gives you a large fat rev counter that lights up towards its redline, also.

There is Apple CarPlay, inductive charging for your phone, and a choice of 2 seat styles, fixed-back Recaros one of them. The roofing gubbins do consume into legroom a bit, though. The little’sound window’ — a piece of glass which opens up the V10 orchestra without you having to shed the roof — ought to compensate.
