What is a Mercedes GLE 300d?
Nope. That is how large the car appears, how hulking its existence. The GLE’s real dimensions are not far different from SUVs it competes with all – the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, such as – but on UK streets it seems ever so slightly larger for some reason. Odd.
That means that the engine tasked with moving about that 2.2-tonne SUV is not among Merc’s excellent straight-six gas or diesels, but its own also-excellent 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol. This generates 242bhp and 369lb feet – a little less energy and a good deal less torque compared to six-cylinder-only BMW X5 (the 30d) by which it competes.
Meanwhile Mercedes assert 169g/km of both CO2 and up to 39.2mpg, to the BMW’s 162g/km and 36.7mpg. In combined driving we saw reduced to mid-thirties in the Mercedes – more or less exactly like you would get from the BMW.
We would save and spend the excess on both. The four-cylinder petrol is strong and torquey enough, only, but the majority of the time it sounds and behaves just like a little engine that is being requested to move a very major vehicle. Quiet for a four – we actually rate this motor in many every other Mercedes we have attempted it – but necessarily and inescapably louder, not as elegant and cheaper-feeling compared to a six.
A large Merc is presumed to become a luxury thing, along with the GLE just feels like less of a person having a lookup engine. It’s at least fairly inexpensive – you may see 40mpg on a run up the motorway – and also a fantastic partner for your nine-speed automatic gearbox, which is smooth and generally fairly on it as it comes to choosing the proper equipment for any specific situation. Responds well to paddle-pulls, also, in the event you opt to take part in a little bit of schporty driving.
